A battery GPS tracker for a trailer or horsebox needs its own power if the asset has no permanent electrical supply. That distinguishes it from a tracker connected to a tractor’s battery. For horsebox owners, equestrian yards and farms storing trailers between trips, the reporting pattern and battery-maintenance plan matter as much as the device size.

What tracking can add to trailer security

A suitable self-powered tracker can provide location records without a permanent vehicle connection. Configured periodic or movement-based reporting can help you check an asset’s reported position, including when it is away from the usual yard. The usefulness of alerts and remote access depends on the confirmed service.

Keep the trailer’s locks, wheel protection and secure storage in place. Tracking adds information; it does not stop coupling, loading or theft and cannot guarantee recovery. Use our trailer lock guide to plan the physical layers.

TAT240: a self-powered option

The Teltonika TAT240 trailer and horsebox tracker is an enquiry-based Rural Secure option for unpowered trailers, horseboxes, containers and movable equipment. Its listed features include LTE Cat 1 connectivity, an IP68-rated enclosure, magnetic mounting and tamper-detection capability.

Its self-contained battery pack is non-rechargeable. Reporting can be configured around periodic updates and movement, balancing useful location information against battery demand. Customer-facing tamper alerts, geofencing and app or web access depend on the tracking package agreed with you.

No fixed multi-year battery life is promised. Update frequency, movement, temperature and signal conditions affect endurance. Frequent reporting may be useful during activity but increases the maintenance burden; occasional reports may conserve power but provide less immediate information. Agree the reporting pattern around how the asset is used.

Self-powered versus battery-connected

The Vital TBC212 uses the equipment’s battery. It can suit compatible powered machinery, but it is not a self-powered alternative for a trailer with no usable battery supply. A tracker’s small internal backup battery should not be mistaken for a long-life autonomous battery.

If a horsebox has its own electrical installation, explain whether that supply remains available while parked. A powered option may be appropriate, but vehicle compatibility and storage routines must be checked first.

How BLE asset-finding tags differ

Rural Secure also has BLE asset-finding tag and discreet sticker options. These are supplementary Bluetooth asset-finding products, not standalone satellite/cellular GPS trackers.

The sticker broadcasts Bluetooth signals that a compatible nearby phone can detect; the supported network may then make a detection-derived location available. Few compatible phones near an isolated rural asset can mean delayed or absent updates. Exact device model, detection network, weather protection and any ongoing charges are still being confirmed for these products. Do not choose them on the assumption of continuous live rural tracking.

Mounting and setup checks

  1. Confirm the tracker model, SIM, platform access and reporting pattern.
  2. Choose a secure location with suitable reception; avoid enclosing the tracker in a metal box.
  3. Use the approved mounting arrangement and check it remains secure during normal asset movement.
  4. Check the first position report and any agreed movement or tamper notifications.
  5. Record the battery-check and replacement plan.

A concealed location still needs to let the tracker work. Follow the current supplied manufacturer instructions rather than placing it wherever is hardest to see.

What will a trailer-tracking package cost?

The TAT240 offer is quoted individually. Hardware, SIM, tracking platform, configuration, accessories and installation will be itemised before ordering. The confirmed £99 Vital hardware and £7.99/month or £79.99/year service prices must not be assumed to apply to this self-powered package.

Is a trailer tracker rechargeable?

The listed TAT240 uses a non-rechargeable battery pack. Follow its replacement instructions and the maintenance plan agreed for your reporting settings.

Can it send a location from anywhere?

Satellite reception and mobile-network coverage affect reporting. Confirm the supported service and expected reporting behaviour for the places where your asset is used.

For powered agricultural equipment, see our tractor GPS tracking guide. Compare all tracking options and our stable-yard security range.

Ask Rural Secure about your tracking setup

Tell us the asset make and model, how it is powered, how often it is used and where it is stored. We will confirm compatibility, service requirements and installation before you commit. Request a tracking recommendation or call 01492 244100.
